Part 2 of 3 part series.
How do we evangelize?
– First, Priorities:
1 Prayer and Fasting. Matthew 17:21 However, this kind does not go out except
by prayer and fasting. We must be prepared. Start making this a part of your
life. Make fasting a priority. Food should no longer be an Idol.
2 This is His work. Matthew 16:18 …on this rock, I will build my Church. He is
building, not us. We are only the messengers. How He decides to use us is
up to Him. But understand, you can not convert the soul. Only He can.
3 Pray continually. You need God’s wisdom, discernment and knowledge.
Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
being watchful to this end with perseverance and supplication for all
the saints.
4 Remember, this is Spiritual Warfare. Put on your armor. Ephesians 6:10-18 This is
a battle against Satan not against flesh and blood.
5 Always, Always, Always: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness self-control. These are the fruits of the spirit in
Galatians 5:22.If these things are not flowing out of you, maybe you should
back off and take some time before God. That may mean completely backing off
until another day.
6 Have a buddy with you. Especially when street witnessing. Four reasons:
1 You always have someone there that can observe your surroundings and keep you safe.
2 You have a legal witness in case something goes wrong and they want to accuse you of something.
3 You have somebody constantly praying for you and the person you are speaking with.
4 You have somebody there to make sure you are in the Spirit and not the flesh.
– Now Practicalities –
How do I witness?
1 Be actually interested in their life. People can see when you are trying to convert them and you have an ulterior
motive. Show compassion and love. Remember, you can not convert them. It is not your job. Your job is to love
them and tell them the good news.
2 Be a learner. Ask Questions. You can not minister to them if you do not know anything about them.
Here are some questions you can ask:
How can I pray for you? – People reveal a lot about themselves when you ask them “How can I pray for you?”.
And be sincere about it. Desire to pray for them.
Where are you with God? – and then listen.
What do you believe about God?
When they say: “I’m a Christian” – What does that mean?
“I’m following God” – What does that look like?
“I’m saved” – Saved from what?
“I gave my life to Jesus” – Are you repentant and walking with Him? If so, what does that look like?
“I’m a spiritual person” – What does that mean?
“I grew up in the church and was baptized” – Are you following God now, and what does that look like”?
“I am not religious” – What do you mean by religious?
3 Do not correct. But do clarify. Your vocabulary and there vocabulary are most likely different. Get them to tell you
what stuff means. Don’t automatically think it is the same thing you think it means. Especially with Mormans and
Jehova’s Witness.
4 Share your own testimony if it helps them understand were you are coming from.
5 Your goal is not to convert. It is to give them the message. Don’t push yourself on people or pressure them.
6 Do not debate. You are not there to win an argument.
7 Be very observant of speech and facial cues. And do not be afraid to ask “why did you just make that face?
8 You do not need to know the answer. If you don’t know the answer, that is ok. Tell them you don’t know. But do
your best to get back to them with the answer.
9 Help them to understand that they are separated from God. Most people think that they are basically good and
that their good outweighs their bad. Use the 10 Commandments – Apply them to yourself. “I have broken every
one of them.”)
Romans 3:10 There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks
after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good,
no, not one.
10 God is a just Judge. A just judge only judges the law you have broken. They don’t look at the good. God is that
just judge. But then He takes off his robe, comes down beside you, pays your fines and goes to jail for you.
This is what the cross is all about. Christ has paid all for you.
11 Final question: What is holding you back? Seek God while He may be found and give your life to Him. Again,
don’t pressure, It is God’s job to convict and restore.
So what does it look like when one truly gives there life to Christ?
They cry out to God, take responsibility of their sin, repent and believe what Jesus has done for them on the cross.
You can help them to understand and do this but don’t lead them in a prayer and that by saying that prayer, they
will be saved.
So then what? Now they are saved, send them on their merry way?
